Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal Treatment & Oral Hygiene
Periodontal dentistry involves both surgical and non-surgical treatments to prevent tooth loss and to restore the tissues supporting your gums and teeth. The major periodontal therapies include Scaling and Root Planning. These both are deep-cleaning techniques and prove effective in controlling periodontal gum infections.
Here at Dulwich Dental Office, our periodontist in London is an expert in the treatment of periodontal or gum disease. At your consultation our periodontist will take a detailed history of your problem and also conduct a thorough examination of your gums. If required, x-rays of some of your teeth may also be taken. Based on the findings of these investigations, a customised treatment plan will be compiled.
Periodontists also provide solutions to your missing natural teeth, replacing them with dental implants.
Periodontal disease is a term used to describe a range of diseases that affect the gums, the bones and the soft tissues of the mouth. It is important to mention here that these supporting structures play a vital role in securing your teeth in their correct position. If periodontal disease goes untreated, teeth will eventually become loose and have to be removed, or fall out.
Sadly, periodontal gum disease does not typically exhibit any early signs or symptoms in patients. You may experience bleeding while brushing or flossing the teeth. There can also be a little swelling and redness along the gum line. In extreme cases, the gum tissues may recede, exposing the tooth roots.
In advanced stages, there’ll be infections and abscesses in the gums with loosened teeth along the gum line.
In order to detect periodontal disease at its early stages, regular oral health checkups are crucial. Conscientious dental routines will play a major role in early detection of the disease.
- Visit your dentist for regular checkups. This will help with early detection of any problem.
- Have professional teeth cleaning with a trained dental hygienist.
- Brush the teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste taking advice on how to brush correctly.
- Don’t stop brushing and flossing even if that makes your gums bleed.
- Give up smoking; smoking and gum diseases are inter-related.
- Diabetes and gum disease also has a strong inter-connection.
- Go to your dentist immediately if you think you may be developing symptoms of periodontal diseases.
Selecting the right treatment for gum disease depends on the overall health of a patient. One of the most common causes of gum disease is plaque buildup on tooth surfaces. In some cases, a periodontist will first boost your oral hygiene giving detailed instructions on proper brushing, flossing and teeth cleaning procedures.
In certain cases, RCT or root canal treatment might be recommended to clean the area underneath your gums. Root debridement where the damaged oral tissues are removed is also used for some patients.
In advanced stages, periodontal surgery will be performed.
